Michael Marson is the Manager of Advisory Service, Local Government Department, Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development.

The Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development is responsible for establishing and maintaining the legislative and governance framework for local governments in British Columbia – this includes establishing the administrative boundaries for the 27 regional districts, 161 municipalities and some 222 improvement districts across the province. This work is managed by the Local Government Department.

Prior to joining the Ministry’s Advisory Services Branch in 2003, Michael spent eight years with the Ministry of Transportation & Highways Planning Department before moving on to positions in the Housing Policy Branch and Intergovernmental Relations & Planning Division at the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

Over his 21 year career with the Provincial Public Service, Michael has been involved in significant legislative initiatives (Regional Growth Strategies, Community Charter) that have in part shaped the local government system in British Columbia. In his most recent capacity as the Manager, Advisory Services, Michael is part of the team developing a change management process to bring GIS capacity and spatial data management practices to the Local Government Department.

Michael has a BA (Geography) from the University of Victoria, a Masters Certificate in Project Management (UVIC, School of Business), and is working towards his Project Management Professional (PMP) designation.
